Need ideas for decorating for Spooky Christmas? I got you! From your fireplace, living room, dining room, and front porch. Let's jump right in!🎃🎄🎁
As someone who lives a Halloween-year-round lifestyle, I choose to celebrate Christmas with a bit of a Spooky twist. My home is normally themed to be a mixture of Beetlejuice and Halloween, so I like to decorate my home around those Halloween year-round décor items, which I feel really elevate the Spooky Christmas feel.
💜Fireplace💜
First, let's start with the fireplace.
My fireplace is a little different than others because it is missing the mantel, but I created an illusion of a mantel by hanging a sheer Spiderweb Mantel Scarf, that I got on Amazon, using small command hooks. Behind that mantel scarf, I stuck on enough small command hooks to be able to hang up Spooky Christmas-themed stockings. I handmade these stockings myself and sell them as part of my shop every Spooky Christmas season. To add a little extra touch of Spooky Christmas, I utilize Halloween-colored battery-powered wire lights, that I got on Amazon, and drape them over each small command hook going around the fireplace.
Since we live in Texas and we have cats we don't use our fireplace area, so I decided to decorate it using an outdoor Sandworm lawn display, that I purchased from Spirit Halloween. I use velcro command strips under each piece of the sandworm and stand it up on the tile of the fireplace. To add a Spooky Christmas touch, I like to put a Santa Hat on the back of the Sandworms head as well as utilize the wire lights from the fireplace to wrap them around the Sandworms body.
Around my fireplace, I also have plug-in Jack-o-lanterns that I keep out year-round. For the Spooky Christmas season, I like to rearrange them and add Santa Hats on them as well as plug them in as part of the Spooky Christmas light display.
Another thing you can add around your fireplace are little statues like my little Ghost statue and add Santa hats on them or you can even add a normal Santa or even an evil-looking Santa by doing a bit of DIY.
🖤Living Room🖤
Next, let's move on to the Living Room.
In my living room, I normally have my Beetlejuice tapestry, Beetlejuice artwork, Halloween tablecloth, Beetlejuice Pillows, and Halloween-themed plushies. All these items can help add to the Spooky Christmas vibe we are going for, but I always like to change it up a bit by changing out the plushies. I like to display Nightmare Before Christmas-themed plushies that I have either purchased from Walmart or small businesses. As well as keep out some of the Halloween-themed ones like the ghosts and jack-o-lanterns.
Another item that I keep up year-round, but helps add to the Spooky Christmas-themed feel is Plastic Bats that I hang up on my walls using command strips. I have these going in a diagonal pattern above my backyard door. You can also find these on Amazon.
Since lights are a huge part of Christmas I like to utilize Halloween-themed string lights that have Jack-o-lanterns or Ghosts and use them kinda like a garland over walkways. I hang these up by the corners using command hooks as well.
And of course, we can't have a living room area without a Spooky Christmas tree, but that is an entirely other list of décor items, so let's move on to that next.
🧡Tree🧡
Now as I stated a Spooky Christmas Tree is the center of it all. I feel like there is no Spooky Christmas without a Spooky Christmas tree whether it is small or large it definitely brings the feel of a Spooky Christmas.
For the base of our tree, we use a Black 7-foot Tree that we bought on Amazon. If you want to try to find one in person at a big box store, the best time to find one is during the Halloween season. As we are building our tree we like to add a traditional Christmas train in the middle of the tree. We got this train at Walmart and I feel like it gives off the vibes of the train from Christmas Town in The Nightmare Before Christmas. They also sell other themed trains like the Grinch and I have even seen a Nightmare Before Christmas one that looks more Halloween. Another fun item that we like to add as we are building our tree is a plush Grinch hand holding an ornament and a plush Grinch butt, which we both got at Walmart. These have wires that we wrap around the center of the tree similar to the clamp of the train. I have even seen a Jack Skellington body in his Santa Claus outfit that can be added to a tree in a similar way.
After building our tree we like to decorate it using Halloween colored lights, which are lime green, purple, and orange. I like to purchase my lights during the Halloween season as well because not only can you find these specific colors during that time of the year, but also the light cord is black vs during the holidays the cord is normally a forest green. The pattern in which you place your lights is all up to you, which is the fun part because you can change it up every single year.
Lastly, we like to add fun Halloween-themed ornaments, décor, and unique fun ornaments to our tree. You can find Halloween-themed ornaments during the Halloween season at the following stores: At Home, Michaels, Joanns, and Hallmark. But remember, if you want to snag a unique ornament you can always go support a Spooky Small Business during the Christmas season to snag your very own unique ornament. I handmake and sell some in my shop during the season too!
For our tree topper, we go a little different and unique. We utilize a Tinsel Witch Hat décor item that you can normally find at Dollar Tree. Or you can even get crafty with it and make a fun topper like a Krampus topper would be so cool!
💚Mini Tree💚
If you want more ideas for décor around your home, consider adding a Mini Tree. You can find black mini Christmas trees during the Halloween season. This one I got at Walmart and it came with white plug-in lights attached, but I added some Halloween-colored battery-powered wired lights that I got on Amazon for that extra Halloween flare. Just like the larger ornaments you can find smaller ornaments at the stores I listed previously. This little tree can be added to a side table or even as a little fun piece in your home office or living room table.
💜Dining Room💜
As I stated before, we live in a rental home, so we can't paint the walls nor add holes to the walls, so anything adhesive is our friend. We have black vinyl stripes that decorate our walls to give it Beetlejuice vibes. I got the rolls of black vinyl on Amazon and they are so renter-friendly. I also have Witch Hats hanging off the ceiling by using command strips and clear wire. All the Halloween-themed items in my dining room are there year-round, but I like adding a bit of an extra flare during this season. For example, the Skeleton that sits at our table normally has a Witch Hat, but during Spooky Christmas we switch it out for a Santa Hat. You can find a poseable skeleton at many different places during the Halloween season, but ours is from Home Depot. We also have a little tree in the center of our table that we got from Target in the $5 section. I decided to add some Halloween-colored battery-powered string lights that I got from Amazon, which I feel gives it a bit of a Charlie Brown Christmas vibe.
🖤Front Porch🖤
Now you can get adventurous with your front porch too, but for us, we do the bare minimum. We keep out our outdoor Halloween décor year-round as well, so for any mannequins we have, we just add Santa Hats to them and we have Halloween-colored lights up year-round too, so sometimes we just add more lights.
That pretty much wraps it up though.
As you can see command hooks and strips are a huge part of my Halloween home decor and the reason is because I rent my home, so all of these décor items are renter-friendly ideas.
If you would like more of a visual, consider watching my YouTube video where I explain and show items a bit more up close as we decorate for our 2024 Spooky Christmas.
